DEBATE: Banning all space weapons Empty DEBATE: Banning all space weapons

Before the crisis had ended, Lithuania was pleased to see an effective discussion which established an agreement on a body monitoring the usage of ASAT weapons. However, a problem remains with monitoring space weapons in general.

Currently, nearly all the countries in this committee maintain that all space weapons should be banned, regardless of their magnitude; with the exception of conventional weapons (such as pistols and rifles) for the security of astronauts. However, it matters that we have the consent of the countries with the strongest space programs: USA, Russia and China.

USA has not specified its specific intents, and we invite them to do so, unless they support a ban on all space weapons.

However, China has explained how they are unwilling to disable space weapons with a lack of justification on the matter. We invite them to justify their reasoning, as it is making for stale debate in which the entire committee is against one country. This delegate would like to explain that any national defense capabilities that the Chinese wish to undertake, can be done on the earth. The Chinese do not have to weaponize space for such defensive capabilities.
Weaponizing space will do nothing more than increase the possibility of an arms race (which is already under works), and increase the possibility of violence. Furthermore, the Chinese space weapons program includes kinetic bombardment. For those unaware, kinetic bombardment produces the same energy/explosion radius as a small nuclear warhead. The current outer space treaty bans the usage of Weapons of Mass Destruction (Nuclear bombs) but not the usage of kinetic bombardment, which needs to be amended. Keep in mind the OST was written in 1967, which was before we knew of the possibility of kinetic bombardment. This treaty needs to be amended for a ban on space weapons; at the very least space weapons with massive, destructive capabilities.

Russia has maintained its stance that unless other countries give up their space weapons, they will follow suit and continue their weaponization of space.
