"Even before all this BS in Ukraine, China was courting Russia for more of Russia’s natural gas, if not all of it (Powerful member of the Chinese Communist Party have been on record as stating that China should pay for everything that Russia wishes to export). They were offering to buy it at a much higher rate than what Russia was getting from the Western Europe. When Russia tried to brush off the Chinese with the valid excuse that it would be very expensive for Russia to build the infrastructure to bring natural gas to China the Chinese said they will pay for it and would even build it themselves if Russia wanted them too. Meanwhile in the Russian government there were elements that thought that even though western European nations were not paying the most money it was felt that by supplying them that Russia would receive some diplomatic and trade benefits.
Obviously with the EU and the US pushing for escalating sanctions and even further NATO expansion that Russia is now facing a resurgent military threat from it’s western borders and it would foolish to the extreme to continue supplying energy, resources and other items (like rocket engines) to enemy states.
This switch from supplying gas and oil to NATO to China as well as the new military alliance these two nations recently signed will be seen as increasingly Russia seeing itself as a far more Asian than a European nation. The Chinese Russian alliance may very well prove to be to most important military/diplomatic event for the next 50 years in much the same way NATO was the most important alliance in the second half of the 20th century."
